Best Way To Clean Your Tile Flooring On A Budget

Posted on: 8 June 2016

Choosing tile for the flooring in your kitchen and bathrooms adds a sense of elegance to the home. There are plenty of tile cleaning products on the market, but this option costs quite a bit of money. For homeowners on a budget, there is still a way to keep your surfaces looking like new without overspending on professional grade products.

Use Your Vacuum

The first step in keeping your tile nice and clean is to vacuum it every other day. Most vacuums come with a bare floor setting, as well as special attachments for use on tile flooring. If your vacuum has a brush setting, you'll need to turn that off before using it. Of course, you can opt to purchase a vacuum that is specific to this type of flooring. Bissell, for example, makes a PowerEdge Hard Floor Vacuum so you don't need to worry about attachments or settings. The Shark Rocket is another great option for cleaning tile and hardwood.

Address Spills Immediately

When it comes to spills, it is best to clean them immediately. When you act fast, all you'll need is a rag that has been wet with a little soapy dish water. Simply wipe the mess up before it has time to stain the tiles, or dry and stick to them.

Mop With a Vinegar Solution

Vinegar is an excellent all-natural cleaning product that also has the power to deodorize. Add 1/2 cup of white distilled vinegar to 1 gallon of warm water. Use this solution to mop the floors on a weekly basis, or more often if needed. You can dry the floor with a clean white towel afterward, or let it air dry by opening a few windows or turning on a ceiling fan.

Tackle Stuck-On Foods With Baking Soda

Never use an abrasive cleanser to remove stuck-on foods from your tile flooring. These can scratch the surface of the tile making it less attractive. Though abrasive, baking soda is OK to use because it's so mild. Create a paste with baking soda and a few drips of water. Work this paste gently into the stuck-on food until it comes up. Then wipe the entire area clean again using a rag that has been dipped in a little soapy dish water.

Although it is a great idea to save on day-to-day cleaning when it comes to your tile flooring, it is still a good idea to take advantage of a professional tile cleaning service. Hiring a company like Leo's Holland Floor Maintenance twice a year will keep your kitchen and bathroom in excellent shape, which means less money on repairs down the road and more money in your pocket if you ever decide to sell.
